The town of Kamena Vourla (known as Thronion in Homeric times) is situated at the foot of Mount Knimis at the southeast end of the Maliakos Gulf and developed from 1939 when the Asclepius hydrotherapy center was built.

In the ‘60s and ‘70s celebrities from all over the world spent their holidays here making Kamena Vourla the most popular thermal resort in Greece and one of the most important in Europe.

Today Kamena Vourla is an important holiday destination in Greece, combining a cosmopolitan atmosphere, superb beaches, thermal baths and Spa and exiting mountain walks.

About 4km outside of Kamena Vourla, is the lovely 7th century Monastery of Metamorfosis tou Sotiros (Transfiguration) with priceless relics and a spectacular view of Kamena Vourla.

Outside and not far from Kamena Vourla is the place of the historic bridge of Gorgopotamos destroyed by resistance groups in 1942, Thermopyles known from the anchient Battle and nowadays the monument of the Spartan king Leonidas and the related Museum.

Due to its geographic location, Kamena Vourla is also an important stopping place for travellers on their way towards many other tourist destinations, such as Skiathos, Skopelos, Meteora, Karpenissi, Pelion, Delphi, mt. Parnassus and Athens.
